Christmas market within medieval walls

On a weekend in December, the collegiate church in Gernrode has a very special Christmas atmosphere. Advent awakens in the abbey yard with music, art and all kinds of treats. It promises a small but cosy hustle and bustle between the old walls and cloister.

The gates open with a marching band and the ringing of bells. The traditional "stollen" (german christmas cake from saxony) is cut with great anticipation and everyone is given a taste.

A walk into the sacred hall reveals the venerability of Romanesque monastery churches, whose colours and sounds stand out in the colourful wall paintings and organ. The weekend offers plentiful opportunities to put not only your own singing to the test, but also the sound of the church with Christmas carols and music.

Bids can even be submitted for the nativity scenes on display.
